Winegard Gateway: Swapping the SIM Card

Winegard Gateway: Swapping the SIM Card

This guide will help you replace the SIM card in your Winegard Gateway with a SIM card from a different cellular provider to access the internet.

Before You Begin:

  • Power Down: Ensure your Winegard Gateway is turned off.
  • Detachment Instructions: Refer to the diagram included with your Gateway for specific instructions on safely removing it from its mounting location.

Steps:

  1. Locate the SIM Card Slot: Turn your Winegard Gateway over and find the SIM card slot on the backside. There are two main types:

    • Dual Slot: You'll see a portion of the pre-installed Winegard FreedomGo SIM card (SIM0) exposed. Leave this SIM in place, as Winegard Data plans are still available for purchase.
    • Hinged Slot: Skip to step 3 if your Gateway has a hinged slot.
  2. Dual Slot Gateway (Continue if Applicable): Locate the upper slot (SIM1) and carefully insert your new carrier's SIM card. Make sure the gold metal contact area (chip) faces the electronics board inside the slot, and the angled corner aligns with the existing SIM card. Incorrect insertion will prevent recognition.

  3. Hinged Slot Gateway:

    • Slide the black connector back to the "Open" position following the arrow indicator.
    • Gently pull up on the connector to expose the SIM card slot.
    • Remove the existing SIM card. Insert your new carrier's SIM card with the metal chip facing downwards and the angled corner facing up.
    • Gently push the connector back down and slide it to the locked position, following the arrow indicator. Incorrect insertion will prevent the SIM from locking.
  4. Reattach and Power On: Once the new SIM card is inserted correctly, carefully reattach your Winegard Gateway to its mounting location using the same steps for removal. Finally, turn on the power switch.

Additional Notes:

  • While the pre-installed Winegard SIM provides data access, you can switch to your new carrier using the "Change Provider" function within the Winegard Gateway software. Click Here to check our article on configuring cellular provider settings.
  • Always consult your Winegard Gateway user manual for specific instructions and troubleshooting steps based on your model.
  • You might need to activate your new data plan with your cellular provider for the SIM card to work correctly.
  • If you are having trouble swapping the SIM or configuring the cellular settings please submit a ticket from the top of this page.
